Mercer University and Augusta University PA Programs Serve with CerviCusco

In February, four Mercer University PA Class of 2019 students, traveled with their Program Director Jill Mattingly to Cusco, Peru. They took advantage of a Women’s Health opportunity pioneered by Augusta University PA Program and Medical School. The organization called CerviCusco is a Peruvian non-profit organization committed to improving the health and quality of life of Peruvian women through the prevention of cervical cancer. They focus on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and other women’s health services. Augusta University PAs and Medical Residents have been working side by side with Dr. Daron Ferris, MD, the president and founder of CerviCusco for several years. The PA students from both programs were able to care for patients in clinic and hospital settings. They also joined forces to do screening campaigns into the mountain communities surrounding Cusco. The largely rural and poor population in the Andes region of Peru is disproportionately impacted by cervical cancer. Setting up a makeshift clinic in the basement of a market one morning was all that was needed to start a stream of 67 women showing up for a life-saving pap smear. The opportunity to serve with CerviCusco in this part of the world is exciting and inspiring. The PA students are an integral part of the volunteer team at CerviCusco. The Augusta and Mercer PA students represented our state well with their enthusiasm and collegiality.
