GAPA’s Role with PA Students

The Georgia Association of Physician Assistants (GAPA) can play an important role in your professional development. As a student member, you will receive guidance, networking opportunities and resources that can help as you transition from PA-S to PA-C. Some of the specific benefits when you join GAPA as a student member are:

  1. Get Problems Solved – Quickly
GAPA student members can tap into GAPA’s comprehensive Mentor list to find a qualified PA with the help you need. Even after you become a fellow member (after you graduate) you’ll continue to have a whole army of peers to whom you can turn to for advice, ideas and support. By joining GAPA, you’ll become part of a niche network of members, all facing
similar challenges in their daily practices.
  2. Train For Your Specific Practice
Our bi-annual conferences offer special student tracks that will help you develop and sharpen your overall skills as a practitioner. Our sessions and workshop go in-depth to help you tackle the very industry-specific challenges you will be faced with in your job every day. This informative, results-driven continuing medical education is presented by PA peers and your future colleagues.
  3. Connect with Peers and Patients
GAPA provides a secure online website where you can seek advice on topics specific to your education and future practice. Members also have quick access to an online membership directory, portions of which are also available to the public through GAPA’s “Find a PA” service. Get connected further through GAPA’s social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  4. Get Informed
Through our award-winning newsletter, the GAPA Pulse, you are kept abreast of the latest news from your fellow students in Georgia’s four PA programs. You’ll learn about issues facing our profession including license renewals, legislation, healthcare system developments and more. Our newsletter provides the most up-to-date information on the PA profession in Georgia, and is supplemented throughout the year with a series of regular emails with news about the Association and PA profession.
  5. Get Involved
Student members, as elected by their peers, may serve as GAPA student leaders. This opportunity offers you the chance to jump start your career by participating in GAPA leadership meetings, writing articles for the GAPA Pulse newsletter and much more. Student members often advance to become involved with GAPA leadership after graduation. Being a volunteer leader helps enhance skills associated with management, delegation, marketing and strategic planning. You’ll become directly involved in developing and implementing GAPA professional goals – a rewarding opportunity that will give you recognition among your peers and a unique chance to contribute to the advancement of your specialized area of practice.
  6. Network with PAs in Your Region
GAPA provides local educational and networking opportunities for members through regional dinner meetings. GAPA also encourages its members to participate in activities of mutual interest with other organizations.
  7. Receive Discounts and Cost Savings
Not only is GAPA student membership absolutely free, but you will also enjoy special student rates at GAPA conferences. After graduation, when you become a fellow GAPA member, you’ll continue to enjoy discounts on registration fees at the annual CME conferences.
  8. Get Representation
GAPA is the only organization actively promoting the PA profession in Georgia via public education initiatives, regional meetings, active lobbying and representation to the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners (CSBME) via the Physician Assistant Advisory Committee (PAAC). The organization also acts as a professional liaison with other important healthcare groups including the Medical Association of Georgia, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, the Georgia Hospital Association, CSBME and more. Additionally, GAPA members follow the activities of the Georgia General Assembly, particularly those pertaining to legislation affecting the PA profession, through GAPA’s legislative blogs.

As a student member, you receive all of these benefits, plus the opportunity to apply for GAPA student scholarships. So what are you waiting for? Join GAPA today as a student member. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Transitioning from PA-S to PA-C

When you entered PA school you joined a profession. When you become a GAPA member, you are joining a professional organization that provides the practical knowledge and useful services you’ll need to become an engaged and educated healthcare provider. As you transition from being a PA-S to PA-C, your GAPA membership will connect you with a community of peers that abides by a professional code of ethics and a set of common wisdom. Our profession demands of us a higher standard; it requires us to self regulate, to support each other, and to make clear what it means to be a medical professional. Members of GAPA abide by all of these principles.
